Practice With Care!

By John Van Tassel, Tue, Jul 13, 2021

Two dear mentors shared life-shaping advice. We remember them each day.

Doctors Art and Vi Nickson were in the first graduating class at Logan College of Chiropractic in 1935. They both worked 42 years providing conservative family health care until retirement in 1977. In the 80's, they came to various classes to talk about practice, life, Logan, etc.

One day, Dr Art gave us some advice about patient care and taking care of families. He told us, "Each time you enter a treatment room, before you turn the doorknob, explore your heart. If your heart is full of love and empathy for whomever is on the other side of the door and you are focused on that person, then open the door and greet them with love and kindness.

"If, when you reach for the doorknob, you do not have love and kindness in your heart, do not open the door. If your heart is cold and your mind is on other things, you are not ready to be a doctor. If you are thinking about paying bills, about harsh words with your spouse, frustrations with your staff, insurance problems then you are not ready to be a doctor. Do something about it. Do NOT turn that doorknob. Focus on love, do an affirmation, say a prayer. Whatever is right for you, get love in your heart. Once you are focused with a warm and caring heart, only then is it time to open that door and be a doctor."

I can tell you I am human; I have observed this rule to varying degrees. The rewards, when it is observed well, are immense for both me, as the provider, and for the patient. It warms my heart to count the second and third generation patients we have. Children first brought to my office by their parents in the early 90's are bringing their families to see us now!

As we approach the 30th anniversary of opening our practice on September 9, 2021 we rededicate ourselves to the advice of doctors Art and Vi and the spirit with which they practiced.

Rather than a man of wealth, strive to become a man of value. -Albert Einstein
